There are many different kinds of burns, they can be caused by chemicals, heat and electricity. These burns cause three different levels of severity.
1st Degree- This type of burn effects the top layer of skin. Usually red and painful, an example of this is a sunburn.
2nd Degree- This type effects the top two layers of skin and cause blistering to the area. This is the most painful type of burn. 3rd Degree- This type of burn effects all three layers of skin and is painless due to nerve damage. The skin will look waxy, charred and/or fake. What should you do...
- Seek medical attention and depending on the severity and amount of surface burned you should call 911.
- Brush of power substances (if a chemical burn) then rinse and cool with plenty of cool water. Be careful not to over cool large burns, this may cause hypothermia.
- Avoid putting greasy ointments on the burned area unless instructed by medical personnel. Greasy ointments tend to lock in the heat of the burn causing further damage.
*** Important Note***
Most burns continue to worsen over a 24hr period. Keep in mind that burns to the face, joints, hands, feet and genitalia are always considered emergent when burned.
